Social commentators are calling it a “man-cession”. A down-turn which is disproportionately hurting male workers, such as those in manufacturing, whilst leaving women in, say, retail and officework relatively unscathed. The Times writes about it here.
Nothing British attributes the rise of racism and extremism to the anger and resentment caused by bona fide grievances. A man-cession can’t, therefore, be a good thing.
There’s been lots written about this in America (see the attached graph). But less in the UK. The stats produced by Times are a bit marginal and the story is mainly anecodotal, but it seems to ring true.
Does anyone else have any views this so-called man-cession phenomenon?
James Bethell

Well there’s an argument to be had that the traditional man’s role has been eroded, that generally work has been feminised.
Less full time, more part time jobs.
A lot of working men’s jobs are now in cleaning or shop work, there’s very little industry left.
Take train driving as an example, it used to be a dirty manual job but has increasingly become a button pushing job in a pseudo office environment.
Truck or bus driving have some similarities to the past but not much else does.
Then there is man’s role as a father, even science & benefits have reduced the need for daddy to be present.

Political correctness and equal opportunities legislation has forced employers to recruit women, ethnics, homo’s and the disabled over normal British lads. The police force being a prime example!
This so-called positive discrimination breeds resentment which eventually leads to apathy/alcoholism/drugs/violence/crime etc.
This is a monster you have created in your over-zealous promotion of minority groups and empowering the weak, unworthy and useless to make yourself feel good!
The tories if elected to office will only exacerbate the problem by forcing these downtrodden lads into sub-NMW work removing their last shred of pride and dignity!
Hot debate. What do you think?

The other day a reporter on ITN news gleefully said:
“good news on the recession front, unemployment has actually fallen!”
Yeah right, all that has happened there is a few hundred thousand have been pushed off JSA either onto the sick, sub-NMW work, or lost their benefits entirely in order to make Gordon Brown look as if he’s tackling unemployment!
PS. Women on the other hand have the option of having a child, and single mothers – a bigger burden to the tax-payer – are not classed as unemployed, so that explains why the ‘man-cession’ phenomena has come about!

I think somebody came up with a figure of 8 million are economically inactive in this country!
So I think the true unemployment figures are really at record highs & may well get worse.

Another side effect of tory/labour benefit reform, which is already being implemented as we speak is a lot of women will choose to purposely get pregnant as opposed to being forced to work for basically £2.00 an hour!
Well done, thats gonna save the tax-payer loads of money aint it?!
Meanwhile the CSA will be tracking down the fathers and taking a big chunk out of their wages, so much in fact it aint worth them going to work anymore!
The wider social implications for this are disastrous!
The tories have stated they will continue to line the pockets of private agencies such as A4e who will be paid for fiddling the employment figures by exploiting the sub-NMW new deal loophole!
The unions are too busy campaigning against the BNP and cosying up to foreign workers and queers to care about this disgusting traversty…
Only the BNP will stop this exploitation and prosecute those profiteering from it!

Unemployment figures have been massaged for years. This is why we have so many universities with lack-lustre students gaining worthless degrees that make the old Eleven Plus look hard.
