Harriet Harman has tabled a motion banning MEPs from Westminster
We believe the new rules banning all MEPs from entering Westminster are wrong and counterproductive.
According to the Guardian newspaper, Harriet Harman, as Leader of the House of Commons, is responsible for the move. Most commentators see the measures as an “effective ban” on the BNP from the national parliament.
Labour MP John McDonnell led the campaign and said: “I’m pleased the government has listened, and decided to exclude the far-right racist BNP from Westminster, symbol of our national democracy.”
It slaps of hypocrisy when MPs talk of democracy while stopping elected officials from attending Westminster. Ordinary voters can see these illiberal measures are a reaction to the June 2009 European election result and it only helps to foment more cynicism in British politics, as most people can see the decision to deny Nick Griffin MEP and Andrew Brons MEP access to the House is discriminatory and bitter.
Attempts to ban or curb the BNP and its role in public life through rules, regulations and motions will ultimately fail as they don’t address the feelings of the one million disaffected voters who were attracted by the nationalist party during the European elections. Moreover, this allows Nick Griffin to reasonably say (as indeed they have done) that this response from Labour reveals how scared they are of his party’s victory in June 2009.
Such actions only serve the BNP and lend credibility to their argument of persecution by a “liberal” Establishment.
The simple answer is this: you can not legislate the BNP out of existence. Labour (and those who have supported this ban) won’t defeat the BNP by burying their heads in the political sand. If you don’t want Nick Griffin & co. in Westminster start by dealing with the concerns of ordinary and hard-working people such as unemployment, Islamism, the recession, immigration and European federalism.

banning them is counter productive,

i agree with THESE sentiments; in a democracy all points of view should be heard without fear nor favour, no matter how unpalitable they might be to certain segments of society. This of course can never be extended to groups or individuals that promote violence!
The BNP are a legitimate political party and should enjoy the same rights and resposibilities as any other political party, and attempts to deny them will only open the door down the track to denying other groups their rights.
If people disagree with the BNP, argue the issues on their merits, do not denigrate the individuals… or to put it another way, in aussie rules football there is a saying “PLAY THE BALL, NOT THE MAN”

Furthermore, they allowed sian fein their seats in parliament and those blokes were directly responsible for murderous attacks on the British people; i do not think you could say the same for the BNP.
It is about bloody time that the major parties started listening to the concerns of joe public regarding mass immigration and the issue of the BNP would not have arisen.
More power to the BNP for shaking the tree of free speech

Aussie Al, agree with your point about Sein Fein, though they are eleted directly to Westminster.
Privy to your point about Nothing British thinking that BNP is neo-Nazi, this is not true. We believe that those who have voted BNP are frustrated and angry, but that the BNP are not the solution.
We feel that if people knew who the “leadership” are then they would be shocked. But our ultimate goal is not to tell people who they should or should not vote for but to influence policy makers to address voters real concerns.
That is why we become angry when Labour attempt to ban and legislate against the BNP (even though we wholeheartedly disagree with them) because we believe they have a mandate. It is up to the main parties, who are accountable to voters, to listen and then act on citizens concerns.
Put it another way, I wouldn’t ban SWP or UAF, who can at times be just as totalitarian. Anti-democratic politics makes people angry and only helps to undermine everybodys freedoms.
This campaign is about democratic engagement with frustrated individuals and a haven for free discussion, not a forum for simply attacking people we don’t agree with.
But thanks for making such a useful and constructive contribution to the debate!
Thanks,
M

I’m not frustrated or angry, Maurice. I would be frustrated if I could only vote for the Labour or the Conservatives because I know they won’t fix the problems we’re talking about – they’re just two wings of the same bird of prey.
But I should let you expand on your point. What do you think people are frustrated and angry about, and what is the Conservatives’ solution?

Sam,
In the days of the National Front there existed the following chant:
If you’ve got half a mind to join the Front,
Don’t worry that’s all you need!
So Simon isn’t misguided; he’s just a wally.
In a strange sort of way this brings me back to my most recent bugbear: this bloody site. You see, in spite of Tory lies, fascism is all about protecting the owners of capital and their middle class arsewipes. Consider the Krupp family in Germany – and then think about what every socialist from Lenin to Castro has done to that class and its bumsuckers.
So the BNP do not threaten the likes of James Bethell, the owner of Nothing British. He is one of Murdoch’s scabs who put 6,000 print workers on the dole: the BNP love people like Jimmy!

I don’t support the blog, Maurice, and I do not think that Toryism leads to fascism. Do try taking an EFL course, because I honestly think that your English, although good, is not all that great.
What I said was the fascism does not threaten either the owners of capital or its little dogs- like Jimmy. How anyone can misread that fairly straightforward point in beyond me.

Fellist hit the nail on the head when he said the two major parties were both wings of a bird of prey.
Despite the rhetoric, no party has got the balls to address the question of mass, unregulated immigration. I cannot think who they are beholden too, but it is enough to stifle any debate, because as soon as an objection to rampant immigration is raised, then they are howled down with taunts of racist, racism…
The people the western world over are sick and tired of the third world moving into their backyards and only the BNP has the guts to stand up to the PC brigade and offer any form of non-violent resistance.

I don’t know why you are arguing on an anti-BNP page. Racists and anti racists will never see eye to eye, seems like you are both getting aggravated that this country is full of foreigners and your beloved Nick Griffin is powerless to do anything about it.

I think that Labour Tories and the Libs have gone too far this time! They are all running around like Headless Chickens wondering how they can do their Pecking! They have lost their heads and they have now lost their votes too! This is not the way to win votes for their Parties by Banning a Legal Party from Parliament! Dictaters the lot of them! We need to vote for the BNP and get the CROOKS out or there will be no CURE for the Damage they have done to this fine country and its people! Treson thats what it is!

I agree completely. It is the lack of action on immigration, giving up our right to control our own borders, and the apathy as Islamic law seems into our legal system that has tempted me to vote for the BNP. If they weren’t a bunch of racists who support the death penalty I’d vote for them like a shot.

You cannot have a democratic government if the ruling party illegally gag or block political opponents – especially to pander to a foreign colony they set up.
Immigration….. known, seen and suffered but never debated unless moderated by an anti-British, pro-multicultural, ex-communist or in front of a biased audience.
As far as BBC Question Time and Nick Griffin on the panel…. We KNOW what to expect…. shout downs, avoid the issues with personal attacks and censorship!
Immigration MUST be debated and it is totally ridiculous to pretend it has or IS being dealt with by government.
You might be suprised to look at the demographics of BNP website visitors – they are NOT skinheads with switchblades n bovver boots! You are confusing them with the facist labour funded ‘anti-facist’ lot.
Calmly listen to the arguements and offer common sense solutions is NOT what we’ve seen this past 20 years, so its not suprising that millions do not wish to vote for more of the same from Labour or Conservative troughpigs.

The other point is that bunch of morons can’t get voted for as they have nothing to offer except violence, which is what the BNP are accused of all the time.

They would focus on something else as the problems would continue to exist, such as the massive world population growth will still drive mass immigration.
But maybe you feel that is not a problem?

Yes but that is regarded as patronising & colonialist by some.

Well such things already do affect us, we are constantly being asked to bail them out & that also drives people to the west.
I expect that to get worse.

I guess that by banning the BNP from Westminister, the rest of the main stream parties are showing their true colours. It shouldn’t matter what the views of the BNP are, we live in a democracy, well we used to, always wondered if my 24 years in the army was worth it. However, if the mainstream parties took off their rose tinted glasses and addresed the problems in our country instead of ignoring them, or ridiculing others, then the BNP wouldn’t have the support it does. Trouble is, we in live a place where being PC is more important then saying and doing the right thing.
