“The left have a lot to learn from Nothing British”, says Gaby Hinsliff

Gaby Hinsliff, the political editor of the Observer, has written that Nothing British’s Stolen Valour campaign can teach the left a lot about how to take on the BNP.

Nothing British ”co-ordinated this week’s letter from former army chiefs of staff attacking the BNP for hijacking the good name of the military in an attempt to boost its patriotic credentials, with a powerful “not in our name” message using veterans including the Falklands hero Simon Weston.

Griffin’s uncharacteristically hysterical reaction – suggesting they were traitors – successfully wrecked his credibility among the kind of voters he might be trying to attract.”

On the stale approaches of the left she wrote:

“The left tends to dwell on immigration policy and whether it should appease BNP supporters by talking up British jobs for British workers, or restricting access to council houses. The right is more confident that its stance on immigration is populist and is therefore less hung up on it, but has in the past seen the BNP as not really its problem (particularly when it was taking votes largely from Labour supporters).”

Gaby encapsulates the Nothing British campaign as follows:

“The launch of Nothing British was another important moment, reflecting a recognition that Griffin had widened the BNP’s appeal and was trying to steal ground – on patriotism, or law and order – held by the mainstream right that was not overtly to do with race (such as its misleading campaign on rights for squaddies).”

  1. WTF says:

I think the liberal left are far too cosy in their own self righteousness (or “right on-ness”) to take lessons from anybody.
Dontcha know they have a planet to destroy, I mean, save.

Since when did people like Gaby Hinsliff become the absolute moral arbitors for the rest of us? My life has been destroyed by the machinations of the liebour government but then I’m white and lower middle class so I don’t count.
Gaby and her ilk are the hysterical ones. If the BNP are so wrong then what does the establishment have to fear?
I will NOT be told what to think thanks very much.Or come to that, where to cast my vote.
Oh and by the way I think that Nothing British has probably increased the BNP’s popularity!!

Admitting that Hinsliff is correct in saying that “the launch of Nothing British … reflect[ed] a recognition that Griffin had widened the BNP’s appeal and was trying to steal ground – on patriotism, or law and order – held by the mainstream right…” rather undermines your supposedly pure ‘anti-racist’ motive in attacking the BNP, and reveals the party political motive.

Now it is clear why your ‘anti-racism’ is so inconsistent and therefore objectively racist.

  4. Perhaps what the left have to learn is that dealing with problems on a pragmatic rather than an ideological basis gets things done and not just talked about and analysed to distraction.

Aren’t the left and far left historically based on ideology whereas the right, being mainly land owning (historically) have been more pragmatic?
Are left wing ideologies mainly conceived in intellectual class struggles? We are presently experiencing the near end game of the ideology dreamed up by the Frankfurt lot. Main aim, I believe, to destroy capitalism. Their meddling has just about destroyed everything.

ok but you cannot scream and shout how disgusting this is if you are doing the same thing. Or is this ok for the selected few but not anyone else. This is one of the reasons why people are turning to the BNP, if everything was fair and equal people would not be looking for alternatives at election time.

Developed world lol,the world is changing. have you ever been through Dubai? I assume you have as its a major stop on the route to Australia. That was a fishing village 50 yrs ago now its one of the most prosperous cities in the world. It used to be the west that had the towering skyscrapers now its “taipai 101″ the petronas towers and the Burj al Arab. America built the empire state building in 6 months. The towers fell in 2001 and they still havent built Jack shit to replace them. We need europe to help us improve our road network, our railways are shit( Check out Mumbai with its new elevated monorail its nice-i did some of the design on the stations so im blowing my own trumpet there)

i have spent a good 3 months living in mumbai over the last 2 years. Step out of Bandra or Colaba and it is an out and out shithole with at least 25 million desperate people just dying to move to the developed world. Add every other shithole between Brazil and Indonesia and you have a couple of BILLION people that would love to move to Glasgow or Adelaide.
    Enough is enough already!

Check them out theyre beautiful, my input was tiny but a really good project to work on you can see pictures in the hindu (Indian paper) Calcutta has just got the go ahead for a similar mass transport system. i have no doubt itll be just as nice. The indian railway is huge (It was the worlds largest employer at the time) bit of a shame to see the old steam locos we left them with get mothballed but theyve maintained them with love and hence have served them well. Big Beautiful boilers made in the black country im sure a few steam enthusiasts will bring a few back.

honestly cant say that i saw the monorail, but i was impressed with the 5km bridge linking the south to the north (tollway of course) which opened in June. As to the train system, i would have to say it runs on time and for a couple of pence per journey.
When it rains the sewers overflow, buildings collapse and the multitudes living on the pavements get very, very wet. Whilst i sympathise with all of this, it does not alter the fact that the developed world cannot accomodate anymore mass migration, and at least the BNP has the guts to stand up to the PC brigade and state thet enough is enough!

When i was there last october/november i spent a good deal of time upstairs at Leopolds bar, which was targeted purely because of foreign tourists. When i was back in july i learnt 12 people were killed and many more wounded. Luckily i left 5 days before the attacks. But they were not the first attacks and will not be the last. The Hindu majority do themselves no favours in their discrimination against moslems, which has been going on for donkeys years. But on the flip side, moslem extremists are the same the world over and have scant regard for peoples lives and are basically a malignant cancer growing within western societies.

Aussie Al said: “if we wean ourselves off oil, then the arab countries will no doubt return to desert nomads.”

I think the Arabs are pretty sanguine about that. I heard an interview with a Saudi Prince in which he said something like “200 years ago we rode these lands on camels, today in Rolls Royces, and 200 years hence on camels.” Seemed fine with that, as I think he ought to be. The difference between Arabs and us, is that during these ‘good times’ our leaders have tried hard to give our country away.

In some of the arab states more than 70% of residents are foreigners hired to work high-end jobs in the oil and financial industries or low-end jobs cleaning loos and such; but none of them, NONE, are given citizenship. They work their 12 month contracts and then go home. Whatever happens to the economy, Arabia stays Arab. Again, as it should be.

I think about that before I mock the Arabs for their lack of creativity.

Every project employs a certain amount of Saudis on it and HAS to. I remember insisting that some pipework was coated and lagged to prevent corrosion and the guy said it dosent rain here.. So i picked up a pebble and threw it into the the sea and explained it didnt have to with the ocean 10m away.??!! but unemployment is rife (as high as 50%) amongst young saudis. The Al-Saud family run the show with an iron fist(supplied by uncle sam) lots of disenchanted youths love bin laden cause some expat is doing a job they could have if they were related to the right family.
