The protest outside the BBC demonstrates graphically how the traditional “no platform” policy has failed to meet the challenge of popular nationalism – while the demonstrators picket outside, reliving folk memories of “Cable Street” in the autumn winds, Nick Griffin MEP is inside a warm TV studio debating mainstream policy makers. It’s a harsh contrast.
Worryingly, the actions of such demonstrators are not just tragic, they are becoming counter-productive. Whilst peaceful demonstrations of solidarity can be an important way of facing down bullies, street activity that becomes violent or disrupts residents, costs taxpayers money, wastes police time and, most importantly, plays into the hands of the BNP by supporting the myth that they are are a gang of “lonley patriots” resisting the might of violent mob acting on behalf of the State-subsidised Establishment .
One example of such an organisation is Unite Against Fascism which is run by senior members of the Socialist Workers Party and Ken Livingstone, the former Labour Mayor of London . They have taken a central role in mobilising the White City crowds trying to stop Nick Griffin from getting inside the Question Time studio.
Nothing British believes that these sorts of demonstrators should be allowed to protest peacefully and that their sentiments on fascism are noble. But, as recent “solidarity” demos have shown, opponents of groups like the BNP and the EDL sometimes cross the line, with riots leading to arrests and policemen being injured.
Moreover, demonstrators against the BNP have not always attacked all forms of fascism, especially the Islamist variety. Will the organisers of today’s demonstration be out in force the next time the Islamist cleric Anjem Choudhury and his mob turn up to intimidate secular democrats? After reading Alexander Hitchens’ blog on Harry’s Place, we are not so sure.

They seem quite fascistic to me, in the sense of not tolerating political opposition. That’s not to say they’re fascist of course, fascists at least were nationalists and the UAF, like nothingbritish, is anti-national, at least when it comes to European peoples. The conflation of fascism with nationalism is also selectively used. Why isn’t Maurice Cousins, Conservative Friend of Israel, a fascist? Why, that’s because the Jewish people are entitled to a state devoted to their interests.

Im an engineer ive just returned from a 1yr contract in southern Italy building a Gas turbine power station. The Italians loved the british workers that came with me pipefitters welders etc. The Italians had the utmost respect for the skills we brought. Now i have a choice i can go to the middle east or Singapore where British skills are sought after. Europe is brilliant i can go and help a nation without the skills i have and earn good money…. You dont have to drive a tanker… you choose to drive a tanker because you probably think other people in other countries are beneath you …

Volkswagen is British my friend. After bombing Wolfsberg flat, one of the british engineer regiments put all the machinery and presses back to work and started to re-manufature the cars (a few of them were driven back to blighty by the typically cheeky squaddie)
so even though they bombed us etc, after we kicked their asses we still held out our hand and pulled them to ther feet.
