Dorset veterans speak out against BNP leader

Dorset war veteran William Davis-Sellick, aged 75, was among a number of Devonshire and Dorset Regiment veterans who joined the grieving families of the soldiers to fly the regimental standard at the ceremony last Tuesday in Wooton Bassett.

According to a local Dorset newspaper, Mr Davis-Sellick and his comrades were incensed to see the BNP leader with a contingent of party members at the solemn occasion at Wootton Bassett.

He said: “I understand it was the first time he has ever been to one of these ceremonies. I think for him to be there on this occasion was totally wrong and it caused a lot of disruption. You could see that some people were very upset to see him there and there were some people who wanted to duff him up.

“The police were having to protect him. As an ex-serviceman I have spoken to quite a lot of other servicemen and they were not happy to see him there at the repatriation of our lads. He was just there to have his photograph taken.”

Mr Davis-Sellick served as a cook in the Dorset Regiment in the early 1950s before its merger with the Devonshire Regiment, and was deployed to the Korean War. He is now an active member of the Gillingham branch of the Devonshire and Dorset Regimental Association, which has its main headquarters in Exeter.

He said: “We send as many men as we can muster to each repatriation service to fly our standards and they are very emotional occasions. To see the parents throwing flowers on the hearses is very hard. Although I was only a cook in the Army, I had some very good friends that I lost out there and these ceremonies bring those memories back.”

Tony Coombes, secretary of the Gillingham branch, who spent his national service in the Dorset Regiment between 1955-57, said that crowds were unhappy with Mr Griffin’s presence.

He said: “There were a lot of people in the crowd who were concerned by that gentleman’s presence and found it somewhat disturbing. However, I would suppose he would say that it is his right to be there.”

The Devon and Dorsets were amalgamated into the Rifles which was formed in 2007 and is the largest infantry regiment in the British Army. The Rifles has been hit hard by the recent upsurge in violence in Afghanistan. It has suffered 29 fatalities so far this year. The latest was killed by small arms fire on Sunday. On Monday this week, both Mr Davis-Sellick and Mr Coombes were again in Wootton Bassett with representatives of the Devonshire and Dorset Regimental Association to pay their respects as former Dorchester schoolboy Philip Allen, 20, of the 2nd Battalion the Rifles and Samuel Bassett, 20, of 4th Battalion the Rifles, who was from Plymouth.

Sikh pilot who fought Nazis condemns Griffin

One of the last surviving Indian Second World War fighter pilots has launched an attack on the BNP after it used images of a Spitfire in its campaign.

Mohinder Singh Pujji hit out at the far-Right party, and urged all British ethnic minorities not to shun the forces. The 92-year-old RAF Squadron Leader flew a Spitfire in the Battle of Britain and also met Sir Winston Churchill. He was one of only 18 Indian pilots in the RAF in the war, and the only Sikh to fly wearing his turban.

Sqn Ldr Pujji said he was outraged at the way the BNP has used imagery from the war: “The BNP are wrong to use the Spitfire as representative of their party. They forget people from different backgrounds helped in the Second World War. I am proof of this – I was flying a Spitfire. I also met Winston Churchill. Even in those days, there were ethnic minorities fighting for the British. I would recommend the armed forces for young people, regardless of race.”

Sqn Ldr Pujji was born in Shimla, India, and volunteered for the RAF in 1940 after qualifying as a pilot in 1937.He was shot down twice and flew missions in North Africa and Burma, winning the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he flew commercial airlines, settling in Newham before moving to Gravesend. He was made a freeman of Newham in 2005.

“He was just there to have his photograph taken.”

Well to the best of my knowledge the BNP have not made use of any such foto, it was probably a tabloid photographer making a cheap headline without consent.
Maybe he should have worn a hat?

“Sikh pilot who fought Nazis condemns Griffin”
I can’t see that the foto of a Polish Spitfire is anti Sikh Spitfire pilots, he equally used the experience in his CV to fly commercially & why not, it gave him a good career?
He is not threatened by the BNP’s present stated position, he may well live to see BNP MP’s next year but I think that is all.

Mr Pujji is undoubtably a war hero and should be honoured as such. I am sure many supporters of the BNP would agree.
This does not detract from valid concerns regarding the multicultural experiment and mass immigration.

  6. Stephen H says:

Everyone in this country (including BNP Members) had relatives, friends and loved ones who were involved in the war, supporting the war and indeed dying in the war.
They (whoever, or whatever, they may be) by the actions of their ancestors, have earned the right to use any symbol from the war in whatever political way they see fit.
Why is it that the established parties refuse to face the immigration problem and discuss it in public?
Why is it that they instead choose to take actions such as turning their backs, or walking out on BNP candidates?
They carry out those silly actions because they too relise that the immigration issue is a real and vast problem here in the UK.
The established parties have all, in the past, contributed to that problem and continue to do so.
That is the reason that they all scream racist and refuse to share a stage with the BNP, they are scared that someone might just ask them some unanswerable question about the immigration problem.
Look, you stop and talk to 1oo people at random on the street. Out of that 100, how many do you suppose would state that the immigration situation is untennable?
Well lets assume it is a very conservative 10 people.
So if 10% of people agree that the immigration in the UK is out of control, then how many MP’s in parliament must think exactly the same?
Yet evryone of those MP’s values their seat and their income far more than they value what is right and what is wrong.
That is why the BNP membership is growing and untill the thieving MP’s in parliament get to grips with the immigration problem then the BNP membership[ will go from strength to strength.
You can turn your backs on BNP candidates and hide your heads in the sand as much as you like. Nero fiddled whilst Rome burned and our MP’s in Parliament are doing the same.
Finally, did you notice that not once did I mention colour?. The colour of someone’s skin matters not to me. What does matter is the overloading of this country by immigration from all over the world, from all colours and all creeds.
I am an ex New Labour Branch Chairman and activist and my only hope of seeing any action on immigration lies with the BNP
Now you show me, where, amongst all the other parties manifesto’s, there is a solution to the immigration overload?

    Well!, I am waiting?

If you actually took your blinkers off and looked at BNP policy on a whole host of other issues instead of banging on about the tiresome ‘race & immigration’ nonsense you might realize they have a more sane approach to tackling this nations problems than the fascist scum we are stuck with now!

If stopping ALL foreign aid, withdrawing from the costly EU and pulling out of afghanistan creates employment, wealth and prosperity in these islands then surely thats a good thing isnt it?!

It never ceases to sadden me that “Nothing British” rails against the BNP and yet proposes NOTHING to address the concerns which have led to its rise. I suppose this is hardly surprising since your parent body, the Conservative Party (what, by the way, does it actually want to conserve?) also proposes absolutely NOTHING which might halt and reverse this catastrophic foreign invasion. A cap on numbers? – see what Migrationwatch has to say about that!

So, we ask for bread and you offer us stones – stones in the form of empty and barren words of abuse (“fascist”, “racist”) culled from Marxist journals such as Searchlight. You do not even attempt to explain what these words mean in this context or why they apply to the BNP, presumably you do not know and think that the words alone are sufficient condemnation in themselves. By using Searchlight you have touched pitch and are duly defiled thereby.

What do you want? What do people like Simon Weston, Tim Collins etc. want? Do you all really want our country to become a foreign place, unrecognisable and unwelcome to our forebears, including those recent and dearly remembered forebears who fought and died for our country in two world wars? Because that is what you are all helping to bring about.

I see from the BNP website that Nick has formally asked the question concerning financial assistance from the EU emergency fund to assist our people in Cumbria, the victims of the recent flooding which by anyones standards must be regarded as a disaster of some magnitude.

Compare this with the actions of the cretinous Bumbling Brown, who promised two million in aid for the region while throwing well over a hundred million pounds of OUR MONEY overseas in fruitless foreign aid, an initiative which was gleefully announced on the same day that Brown offered this piffling amount. Dave will of course suitably refreshed from his end of the Westminster trough, rush to support Brown fully, so long a a photo opportunity or two are in the offing.

Support for the BNP will continue to grow steadily while the current crop of arrogant self seeking and ever more greedy idiots are allowed to run this country and to continue to oppress the people, turning it evermore into a police state where free frank discourse is suppressed.

Be prepared to have Britons prosecuted for “Holocaust Denial”. Whether one agrees or disagrees with the popular story, many wish for an open debate. Already in too many countries one may be arrested for such a crime (Canada appears to ignore the Constitution in this case and sadly HM the Queen [with poor or treasonable advice] has allowed her representatives to ignore the Constitution).
In a free society, that should be “a given”. Up to now, in the UK, legally it is “a given”, although one might find difficulties outwith the law in getting the opposite view across.
There are now already moves afoot to make to force ALL nations in this new (unconstitutional) EU to make “Holocaust Denial” illegal.
The subject (although an important, one even today) is not the point. It is our freedom to think and speak a we believe.

Agree or disagree with the argument, allow it. The EU already has plans to outlaw it within it’s borders. Why should “I have a dinner jacket” of Iran become the historian?

I’m not trying to cut off all free speech, but I agree with the man I was talking about, there are some words and insults that have been consigned to history which I’d be quite happy to have stay in history.

Holocaust deniers should be allowed to forward their theories without threat of imprisonment. They should be subject to scrutiny and be ridiculed as a result. But imprisoned, NO.

I’m not talking holocaust denial, I completely agree that people with that belief should be allowed to speak so we can scrutinise exactly what they’re claiming.

I agree with Aussie Al. If someone wishes to hold a belief that conflicts with all reason and evidence then that’s their problem. Perhaps they’ll ban people from ridiculing or questioning the tenets of the Flat Earth Society or religious fundamentalist cranks who believe that the earth is a mere 10,000 years old. Despite all evidence to the contrary. They do of course have a perfect right to feel ‘insulted’ but not the right to have their beliefs questioned. They also do not have the right to demand that ‘Those who insult Islam should be beheaded’

It was good idea to keep some of the camps as proof as a lot of people would have burnt them down & returned them to farmland.
Some distasteful bits of history do need to be preserved for future generations to see for themselves.

My arguement was nothing to do with Climate Change or the Holocaust. I’m quite thankful that I’ve never been a victim of racism, homophobia or any other kind of abuse. No one should suffer abuse or discrimination no matter what skin colour, country of origin, religion or sexuality.

the Jewish lobby are too sensitive (hypocrites), the Muslims are too sensitive (morons), Christian Fundamentalists are too aggresive ( usa ).

Remember the old adage… sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me.

We still call wogs, wogs in this country; some frown upon it though. Where the line has to be drawn, is when there is incitement to violence. Other ethnic groups are racist as they still employ violence against others, (former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe etc etc…)

  88. Edmund says:

The problem is, as I once argued with someone, if you only outlaw inciting violence then a smart bigot will keep within the law. If he knows he can say whatever he likes otherwise that won’t discourage him. I’m not just talking religious discrimination either. I watched that Panorama programme set in Bristol and to be completely frank I was ashamed that any part of Britain could be like that.

Britain has this fantastic image of being liberal and tolerant, unfortunately in reality its exactly that, an image. As I said, no-one should be discriminated against or abused, whether they’re white, black, gay, straight, bisexual, Muslim, Hindu or even Jedi if that’s what you want to believe. I can tell you from conversations with him that my grandfather didn’t fight in WWII for intolerance and bigotry (I should point out I’m not accusing anyone in this debate of that).

Edmund. I can assure you that Britain is a far less tolerant, crueller place than ever it was before words were made illegal. Why are you so terrified of words? Don’t you understand what is actually happening?

  91. Edmund says:

Have you ever been the target of racism or homophobia? I’ve known people who were, and seen people suffer it. Its not the words that are the problem, its the way its said. “Go back where you came from” said jokingly wouldn’t offend anyone, said with venom or agression I think most people would take offense. I’m not going to pretend to know what’s its like to suffer that kind of abuse cos thankfully I’m yet to suffer it. No-one deserves it.

    @ Edmund…

Every person has suffered some form of discrimination, abuse, intimidation or persecution at some point in their lives, it’s entirely natural and it’s what makes a person stronger…

Hiding behind ones race, sexual orientation, religion etc. as an excuse is pure cowardice and just breeds animosity!

While Edmund’s views are laudable, eventually you have to decide what you believe in & what you will defend.
You can turn all 4 cheeks but still some people will want a lot more from you.
PC politics tries to stop people being judgmental & from having standards that they want kept.

I think the time is fast coming where people will say “Enough is enough, a line in the sand has been drawn, they shall not pass”.
I think a surprising amount of people may hold their noses & vote BNP, whether they will admit to it, I don’t know.
But anyone with even a limited view of the world & politics can see what Labour have done & that the Conservatives are unlikely to be much different.

David Cameron will probably get a zero honeymoon period in June 2010.

What’s wrong with not being judgemental? I have known plenty of people who if you went on first impressions you would probably steer well clear of, but when you got to know them you discovered you had misjudged who they were. I’m not expecting people to celebrate someone being gay/non-white/non-Christian, but I’d like to think in Great Britain we’d respect people whoever they were, not assume things because of lifestyle choices. By most people’s standards I don’t fall into the “normal” category, and to be honest I don’t particularly want to having seen what its like.

  95. WTF says:

I think in the end even Edmund will be judgemental when push comes to shove, there must be something he will say “No” to.

But that’s for him to decide where he draws the line on any particular subject.
I just worry about those who won’t give someone that choice.

  96. Edmund says:

My point is that, and again this is not an allegation being purely aimed at the BNP because I’ve heard many people make this, people tend to hear a description of someone and based on some stereotype make an instant judgement on someone. People who think Muslims are all extremists, gay people all perverts, I think I can add Tories all being paedophiles to that list judging by how often some people have raised the allegation on here.

My grandfather had an attitude I wish all people had: anyone he didn’t know started on the same footing with him, if you wanted his respect you had to show him you deserved it. He had respect for you no matter your background, sexuality, religious beliefs (an achievement since he himself was once a vicar).

Some people do deserve to be judged, all I’m saying is not to judge based on stereotypes or personal bias. If I believed some of what I’ve heard BNP members described as I’d think you were all Nazi’s who hated non-whites, gays and non-Christians and who claimed the Holocaust was a fraud. Thankfully I try and make my own judgements on people.

  97. Edmund says:

WTF, have you ever tried to understand the people you judge? I hear the arguments about Muslims being anti-British or gay people not being “normal”, and wonder why my experiences of both have never matched these judgements. I have no problem with people not wanting to live like someone else’s culture does, but at least try to understand how someone lives before you start jumping to conclusions about them.

Yes I have lived & worked with gay people & Moslems.
So I don’t make ignorant biased comments, I am talking from experience.

I don’t think I’ve said anything negative about gay people by the way?
I do have some small criticism’s of certain gay lifestyles but also of some hetrosexuals as well but I tend to keep that to myself, live & let live, if doesn’t impinge on my life.
I wouldn’t have anything to say about Moslems but they have affected my life & show every sign of affecting it in the future.

You find no problem, so that’s fine for you.
