Public anger at BNP official who says Royals are “traitors”

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010
Richard Lumby B 260310

A screen grab of Richard Lumby attacking the Royal Family

British voters are disgusted by a senior West Midlands British National Party organiser who told local activists that the Royal Family are “traitors”.

In a February 2010 regional meeting Richard Lumby spoke about the treachery of the Royal Family and how the Establishment’s heads (“media whores” and “financiers”) should “hang from every lamp post, turning and bridge” for “betraying” Britain.

A furious Lumby whipped his BNP audience up by saying:

“… there are millions of them [immigrants] coming in through the back door who have no wish to integrate into our way of life. They are being aided and abetted by the traitors in Westminster… every single one of them is a traitor because they turned a blind eye to this. And don’t think the Royal Family are any better either. You may be Royalist and it may upset you, but I do not care because they have signed away our sovereignty and they have not lifted a finger.”

You can see a video of Lumby making these remarks here (forward to about 5.36 mins).

Mr Lumby is married to Tanya Jane Lumby, who was listed as one of three senior BNP officials in the EHRC’s submission to the Central London Court. The other two were Nick Griffin MEP and Simon Darby, deputy BNP chairman.

This is not the first time BNP officials, members and supporters have attacked the Royals.

Mark Collett, head of BNP publicity, has previously said:

“The Royals have betrayed their people. When we’re in power they’ll be wiped out and we’ll get some Germans to rule properly.”

The BNP have refused to condemn a party supporter who called the Queen a “traitor” and a “bitch”.

Last night there was outrage from across the party political spectrum at these un-British remarks made by Lumby. Former Labour Home Secretary David Blunkett MP said:

“This puts an end to the lie that senior BNP members are not anti the Queen and the monarchy. With their own words, they have condemned themselves as the unpatriotic, dangerous and anti-democratic bunch they really are.”

Lib Dem MP John Hemming, Yardley, also slammed the BNP:

“People often don’t know the truth about the BNP.  They are unpatriotic having condemned the Royal Family as traitors …  Some of  their members have been terrorists and have run bombing campaigns in an attempt to kick off a race war.  Most people, if they knew the truth, would not support them.”

Lumby’s disgraceful remarks only go to remind British voters just how un-British these neo-fascist groups are, despite their attempts to wrap themselves up in the flag and the Armed Forces. The BNP make liberal use of the word traitor, but perhaps they should start looking in their own back yard. Griffin should distance himself from these unpatriotic remarks by sacking Lumby.

The Forgotten Generation – surprisingly insightful piece from BBC’s Newsnight

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Paul Mason, BBC Newsnight’s Economics editor, presented an insightful segment on what is wrong with Britain’s economy and what it has meant for those who have been left behind, the “forgotten generation”.

According to Mason, who has spent that last three years studying this issue, the problem is threefold:

1. Low social mobility has caused a rise in anti-migrant sentiments – The perception that “foreigners take British jobs” stems from those who have not benefited from the growth in wealth within our economy. It’s these people who Mason says politicians are not listening to. He adds that society’s obsession with cash, rather than a desire for a better education, has caused a decline in social mobility, which has seen:

“… a deep alienation of a section of unskilled manual workers has created a cultural divide in Britain that would have shocked Orwell and Disraeli, between an urban, metropolitan and multi-ethnic working culture in the cities and the one you find on Margate seafront.”

2. Growth in micro-economies – Over the last 30 years Britain has seen a massive centralisation of “power and wealth”, mainly in London, but also in inner city economies in Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh. The results have meant that industrial heartlands in places like Stoke-on-Trent and Barking have become “scarred with demolition sites”. In real terms it has meant that workforces have suffered badly and are unlikely to ever recover – unless something radical happens. In Stoke’s case, according to Mason, it has fallen from:

“… 106,000 to 98,000 in the last three years and on no projection does it ever get back to 106,000. On a projection that includes government spending cuts, the workforce does not stop shrinking until 2017.”

3. Industrial collapse – The economic models we have adopted for the past 20 years have been at the exclusion of traditional industries. As Mason puts it:

“… wages at the bottom end have not kept pace with growth and the basic test of an economy – does it make poor people richer – has been flunked.”

106,000 to 98,000 in the last three years and on no projection does it ever get back to 106,000.
On a projection that includes government spending cuts, the workforce does not stop shrinking until 2017.

So what is the solution to fixing “Broken Britain”?

Mason says the answer is actually in our past. Former industrial power houses like Stoke-on-Trent, Birmingham and Manchester existed because entrepreneurs decided they wanted to be part of a new revolution.

Mason believes the answer lies in the new revolutions.

1. Technology – This started with the internet, but has now spread to “everything from materials science to medicine to robotics.”

2. Green industries – This started with “carbon reduction and is now changing the way people run businesses and live their lives.”

If Britain wants to help its citizens we need to encourage people to become entrepreneurs and create the conditions that make it easier for people to be part of these revolutions if we are going to get Britain working again.

SOTS and the BNP need to be more transparent about their links

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Bill Murray, director of the Soldiers off the Street, claims that his veterans organisation has “no connection” with the British National Party. He claims it is misleading to suggest he has substantial links with the extremist party. In a recent email to Garry Bushell, the well-known TV journalist and who recently suspended his patronage with SOTS, Murray wrote:

“We have NO conection with the BNP. I was a member and resigned there is a hate campaign going on with Tim Montgomerie, James Bethell and Maurice Cousins with their site Nothing British ”

Specifically, Murray claims he left the BNP in August 2009. But strong links between Murray and the BNP remain well established.

For example, in November 2009 Nick Griffin said it was “politically beneficial” to be linked with SOTS. He told Scottish media:

“It’s politically beneficial for us to be seen with these organisations. We are also involved in other veteran organisations such as Help for Heroes and Soldiers off the Street. It definitely doesn’t hurt the party to be connected to these groups.”

On the Soldiers off the Street’s links page, there is posted the crest and a link to a company called Easy Security Services Ltd (company number 06706626). ESS is a security firm which, according to its Companies House records, has Daniel McDonald listed as one of its directors. McDonald is also a BNP PPC for Horsham.

According to the BNP supporting blog TITVS ADVXAS, in August 2009  Roger Phillips, deputy West Wales BNP organiser, sent a message out to party supporters saying:

“… a new charity has launched in the UK that we support and if any of you can offer any kind of help or assistance could you please contact them on the link below. An article can be found here on The Green Arrow website and the Soldiers off the Street website.”

And Murray’s Facebook “friends” (all screen grabs were taken on 25th March 2010)?

Bob Bailey – leader of Barking BNP, councillor and Romford PPC.

Chris Beverley – BNP councillor, PPC for Morley and Outwood and Chief of Staff to Andrew Brons MEP.

Clive Jefferson – BNP PPC for Copeland and Campaign Co-ordinator to Nick Griffin MEP. Jefferson is also listed as being on the EU pay roll.

Mark Collett – Head of publicity and BNP PPC for Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough.

Peter Mullins – BNP Defence spokesman.

Is it not time SOTS was more transparent about its links and associations with the BNP?
