Durham Uni debate called off – a sad day for freedom of expression –

Friday, February 5th, 2010

100px-Durham_shieldIntimidation has led the Durham Union Society to call off the debate between BNP northern double-act, Andrew Brons MEP and Cllr Chris Beverley, and the Conservatives’ unlikely pairing of Edward Leigh MP and Kulveer Ranger.

After extensive consultations with the Police on the issue of public safety, university authorities were cowered by the threat of clashes outside the university venue. The National Union of Students promised bus loads of members would be sent to Durham to close down the event, according to the DUS press release.

This is a bad day for the  British value of freedom of expression. And a set-back in the fight against extremism:-

The university should show more back-bone. Carolyn Fowler, the University’s Registrar said: “The University statutes clearly state that any threat to public safety supersedes the importance of freedom of expression”. If even our universities make  health and safety considerations paramount, who on earth is there left to fight for freedom of expression?

The police should do whatever’s necessary to uphold the University’s right to hold such a debate, not advising against such meetings. It defies belief that the police are handing the NUS a veto on debate in this country because of the threat of a few bus loads of students.

The NUS’s “No Platform” policy is a repressive, counter-productive throw-back to the arrogant student politics of the 1960s. Instead of bussing in students for a punch-up, the NUS should be teaching students how to win the argument against extremism.

No one likes the idea of life-long Nazi-sympathisers like Brons and young thugs like Beverley using a venue like Durham University to espouse their hate-filled, neo-fascist, racist ideology. Particularly before an election. But if we do not have the confidence to overcome these bullies on a challenged platform then we can be sure to beat them at the ballot box.

Durham Union challenges BNP duo to debate

Durham Union Society have challenged the BNP to a debate

Durham’s Union Society, one of the world’s oldest student debating societies, have challenged Andrew Brons MEP and Chris Beverley to take part in a debate on multiculturalism.

The DUS motion is as follows: “This house believes in a multicultural Britain”. For the proposal will be Kulveer Ranger, an advisor to Boris Johnson, and Conservative MP Edward Leigh.

Arguing against will be Brons and Beverley, Brons’ chief of staff.

Last night, Nothing British spoke to an official from the anti-BNP UAF who confirmed they were against the decision of DUS to challenge the BNP.

UAF are reported elsewhere as saying:

“It defies belief. It is a huge error of judgement and they should think about their university’s reputation. It is outrageous.”

UAF’s decision to not to challenge the BNP in a debate is a pity.

Our views on the BNP being challenged in a debate are already well known. We support any democratic attempt to take the BNP’s revolting views on race and identity head on. We also believe other dubious areas need challenging such as their economic policy. Their attempts to hijack British identity and patriotism must also be stopped. The BNP need to hear these messages loud and clear. In a democratic society debate is the only suitable forum to achieve this.

For more information on Brons please read our briefing note here.

BNP Chris Beverley on foreign exchange

An interesting insight into the growing levels of collaboration between European nationalists at the European Parliament on Andrew Bron’s recent blog.

Chris Beverley, chief of staff to Andrew Brons MEP, writes in detail about his meet-up with fellow European fascists in the European Parliament.

According to Beverley, his new friends include Dietmar Holzfeind, parliamentary assistant to Andreas Mölzer (FPÖ), and officials from Front National and Jobbik.

Over the past few years, the BNP have been building up a significant amount of contacts with neo-fascists across the EU including Hungary, Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Spain and Sweden.

It is ironic that parties that oppose EU membership are using EU tax-payer money to form a pan-European popular nationalist movement.

Nick Griffin attending European Parliament “Less Meat = Less Heat” Hearing

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Nick Griffin and fellow BNP MEP Andrew Brons will inexplicably be attending the European Parliament-hosted “Global Warming and and Food Policy: Less Meat = Less Heat” hearing today. Also present will be environmental activist Sir Paul McCartney and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Dr Rajendra K. Pachauri.

The European Parliament website listing for the event describes the focus as being on urging “legislators and experts to focus on what an individual can do to fight climate change, for example by eating less meat.”

http://blogs.freshminds.co.uk/research/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/pork_pie.jpgSimon Darby assures his blog readers that “Andrew will be bringing a pork pie and Nick will be asking if he can have the windows open!”

For someone so apparently opposed to the waste of taxpayers’ money, Nick Griffin appears remarkably keen to waste it himself. Why would a man recently so vocal in his denial of global warming be so intent on wasting even his own time at such a hearing?

Could it have anything to do with publicity and pandering to UK anti-politics sentiment?

Are the BNP about to chuck Griffin?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

This morning’s article in the Times which says that BNP supporters are calling for Nick Griffin MEP to go after his much-maligned performance on QT last week should be treated with caution.

NG’s performance last week was certainly under-whelming for someone who had shown promise in recent appearances such as Andrew Marr and Adam Boulton. Many members will feel disappointed. However, NB doesn’t think a leadership contest is on the cards:

1. The panel for The Times’s poll was recruited from Stormfront, a well-known and notoriously wacky white supremacist forum where many members regard Griffin as a “sell-out”. It is not reprsentative of BNP members, informal supporters or voters. In fact, in our experience the membership/supporters are very committed to Griffin.

2. The BNP rules largely support Griffin’s hold on the party.

3. There is no obvious successor or agititator for change. Lee Barnes, the BNP’s legal officer is a senior, officeholder in the BNP, but his political judgement is regarded as suspect, even by the BNP leadership. His blog, 21st Century British Nationalism, regularly embarrasses the party with its anti-Semetic, homophonic, Nazi-sympathising articles.

Richard Barnbrook is apparently a leadership contender. Barnbrook is popular, particularly in the South, but he is not regarded as able to grasp a brief (his performances in the London Assembly are regarded as unimpressive). He is accused by his enemies of having a drink problem (this is a funny video of Barnbrook dancing at a wedding).

Andrew Brons MEP, a man with a history of neo-Nazism and racial hygiene theory, is also being muted as a possible contender. But his age and lack of mainstream appeal count against him.

Simon Darby, BNP deputy chairman  and head of press, is probably the strongest performer in the BNP hierarchy. In 2006, Darby was lined up by Griffin to take control of the day-to-day running of the BNP if he was found guilty of incitement to racial hatred. But he is currently a Griffin loyalist and lacks any visibility outside the party.

BNP “whites only” court case adjourned

The Equalities and Human Rights Commission’s injunction against the BNP for breaking race rules has been adjourned to allow the party more time to prepare a defence, after the court was told the party had only instructed its counsel on Tuesday.

Judge Paul Collins has said, while the BNP’s criteria might breach race rules, it had taken a “long time for someone to get round to the idea” that the BNP was breaking the law – which was founded 27 years ago.

The Judge pointed out that the case appears to have been prompted by complaints made to the Commission after the BNP won two seats in the European Parliament in June.

He also added that the EHRC had not provided any evidence that there was “a long queue of black people wanting to join the BNP”.

But the Judge said the BNP had known since June about the possibility of legal action and said it was “unfair” of the party to have instructed its counsel at the last minute. He therefore ordered the BNP to pay the costs of yesterday’s hearing.

There are signs, however, that the EHRC’s court proceedings have unnerved the BNP with Nick Griffin – who did not attend yesterday’s hearing - recently writing: “Adapt or die is the only decision left to make, for failure to adapt would lead either to our being bled white through the courts or crushed by new criminal laws. Party unity is priceless, because a party of brothers standing shoulder to shoulder can be persecuted, but it can never be beaten or broken.”

BNP Members Rules Case Adjourned – BBC News

BNP Duo back in Brussels

Andrew Brons tabled a question on the welfare of horses

This week the BNP’s two MEP’s - Nick Griffin and Andrew Brons – have started back in Brussels.

Nick Griffin sat on the Environment Committee and warned that it was worrying too much about climate change and said, “you are all dealing with the wrong crisis”.

Griffin added: “The crucial point is … the impact of diminishing resources in our geologically finite world.” Later writing, “Peak Oil, not climate change, is the big issue.”

Andrew Brons tabled a question to the European Parliament on the welfare of horses. In his role as an MEP, Brons is supporting the World Horse Welfare’s Make a Noise campaign, which calls for new welfare laws for horses in transit.

Later on today Brons will be sitting on  the “Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee” (LIBE), which is in charge of citizens and human rights within the EU.
