News round up: James Bethell: The right needs to do more | TUC calls BNP homophobic and sexist | BNP attacks minority group

Thursday, September 17th, 2009
C-HOME SHIELD ART

James Bethell, Director of Nothing British, has written an article for ConservativeHome arguing that Britain’s centre-right needs to do more in helping to fight the BNP.

TUCTUC calls BNP homophobic and sexist

At yesterday’s TUC conference, the BNP were condemned as being both homophobic and sexist.

The BNP believes that homosexuality “should not be promoted or encouraged”,  and in its national education policy it refers to the toleration of homosexuals “propaganda” and a “disgrace”. Historically, the party has sought to criminalize it.

The party’s views on women are well known. Recently, Lee Barnes, legal director of the BNP, has referred to “modern” women as being “androgynous” monstrosities, “genderless” and “sexless”. He also believes that flat-chested women mock the “female nourishing form that gave . . . our race its life.”

The party also believes current laws on rape, divorce and abortion discriminate against men and says it aims to redress the balance.

Simon Darby refuted the allegations by saying, ”the one thing where people could accuse us of sexism is that we don’t really agree with sending women into the frontlines of battle. It’s not a sign of a civilised society when you have women fighting your wars.”

On gay parenting, Darby went on to say: “We believe we have natural views, rather than conservative ones, on parenting. We believe a healthy childhood should have a mother and a father.”

ONSFifth of young Britons jobless as dole toll soars

A record 19.7 per cent of young people are out of work in Britain, according to the Office of National Statistics. Another 34.6 per cent, or 2.55 million, are classified as “inactive”.

Voter analysis suggests that the BNP’s core support is amongst 50+ men, the Fathers of these children.

There is no evidence of any growth of the BNP’s support amongst the young, despite the use of social marketing by the party’s on-line team. However, this worrying data does suggest that hopelessness will spread to the younger generation which, in turn, can lead to the sort of frustration, anger that fosters extremism and racism.

BNP attacks minority group

The BNP have attacked an organisation set up to support Scotalnd’s ethnic minorities.

Ian Murphy, Dumfries and Galloway BNP organiser, branded the people of Dumfries and Galloway Multicultural Association (DGMA) as “alien minorities” and called them anti-British.

This is another example of the BNP’s attempts to reach out beyond the confinds of northern England. Two weeks ago the party attacked Celtic FC for hosting an event to help improve social cohesion across the border with Scotland’s Asian community. The BNP have also been trying to tap into Scottish veterans by helping out FEBA, the cash strapped veterans charity. In Wales, the party have held a series of events at agricultural shows and launched Welsh nationalist t-shirts.

We expect more of this to come as the party grows in confidence and reaches out beyond its existing hot-spots over the coming months in the build up to the general election.

News round up: EDL, UAF and Asian Gangs in Harrow | Jack Straw to go on QT | Further Welsh fury at BNP | UK Unemployment to worsen

EDL, UAF and Asian Gangs in Harrow

English Defence League thug

EDL thugs were caught shouting, "We hate Paki's more than you!"

Friday saw more more violence break out between the violent ultra-nationalist English Defence League, Unite Against Fascism and gangs of Asian youths, outside Harrow Central Mosque.

In scenes reminiscent from the 1970s, EDL skinheads raised Nazi salutes and chanted racist slogans such as “I hate Pakis more than you”.

A worrying development is the news that the EDL want to enlist football fans for a Mussolini “March on Rome”-style event. (On the basis , according to insiders, that “you need an army for a war”.)

The EDL are a rag-tag bunch of racists and football hooligans. UAF, however, should know better. After previous clashes we have said that UAF must restrain themselves more as their actions are counterproductive and actually heighten tensions.

It would appear that senior members of the Muslim community also agree. On Friday the General Secretary of Harrow Central Mosque expressed his anger at UAF for holding a counter protest (against the advice of the police) outside the mosque.

Violence and provacative behaviour will not help solve the problems of social cohesion in Britain. Dialogue, serious attempts at addressing alienated voter’s concerns and undistracted police work, however, will.

Jack Straw to appear on QT against Griffin

Gordon Brown is considering putting Jack Starw up against Nick Griffin MEP on Question Time.

Some commentators feel there is a danger that Griffin may throw back at Straw the comments he made about Islamic veils in 2006.

Straw described them as a “visible statement of separation and difference” and called on women to cease wearing them. This allegedly led to ugly instances of yobs pulling veils off Muslim women in streets.

Further Welsh fury at BNP

THE BNP has been accused of hijacking the legend of Owain Glyndr by printing T-shirts bearing the image of the historic Welsh figure.

The image used on the BNP T-shirts is taken from a statue of Owain Glyndr on a horse that was presented to the people of Corwen, Denbighshire, the town where Glyndr was born.

Sculptor Colin Spofforth, who spent four years creating the statue, said: “I certainly did not give any permission for it to be used and I would never have done.”

Mr Spofforth added: “Whoever has done this obviously does not know their Welsh history or what Owain Glyndr was all about.

The Rev Geraint ap Iorwerth, of St Peter ad Vincula Church in Pennal, where a bronze statue of Glyndr stands in the Princes’ Memorial Garden, said: “Owain Glyndr would be turning in his grave if he knew the BNP were using him as one of their heroes”.

UK unemployment to worsen

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development warns there is a “distinct possibility” that weak economic growth and fears over a double-dip recession will lead to further redundancies in the coming years.

The CIPD says despite the UK falling into the worst recession since the Second World War, job cuts have not been as bad as in the 1980s or 1990s.

The Institute warns that unemployment could stay at 3.5 million for over a decade.

According to the US Department for Homeland Security, high unemployment has the potential to lead to alienation and statistically increases an individual’s susceptability to accept extremist ideas. The report cites a 2007 study from the German Institute for Economic Research, which says there is a strong association between a parent’s unemployment status and the formation of neo-fascist beliefs in children – specifically racism and xenophobia.

While the stock market and housing market may be coming out of the recession, hard working families are still suffering from the disastrous effects of the credit crisis on Britain’s heartland manufacturing and business support industries. As the head of the TUC has said today, the UK will only be fully out of recession when unemployment falls. So far, we believe that more needs to be done to tackle UK unemployment and re-tool our workforce.

BNP and Help for Heroes

Help for Heroes

Help for Heroes

The BNP are auctioning two books written by the ex-SAS soldier and Gulf War One veteran, Andy McNab, as part of an online fundraiser for the  veterans organisation “Help for Heroes.”

It’s the latest piece of highly-spun social action from the BNP (“Babe-in-a-box”, “Rochdale-birds”, “Scottish vets”, etc).

The BNP are cynically hi-jacking commendable causes to improve their tattered reputation.

Nothing British strongly recommends that charities like Help for Heroes rejects this sort of money. No one wants to apply a political filter to donations. However, the BNP gain huge propaganda benefits from these stunts in exchange for tiny donations while the charities are inadvertantly giving a leg-up to neo-fascists and rascists.

Welsh angry with BNP

Owain Glyndwr

Wrexham council have said they are angry with the BNP’s use of their national hero Owain Glyndwr.

The BNP have been selling t-shirts through their merchandising wing Excalibur, run by Arthur Kemp. Other heroes include St George, whose image was seen at the EDL protest on Saturday.

A council spokesman say Owain Glyndwr would be “turning in his grave”.

David Jones MP: The BNP are a fact of life

David Jones MP: BNP a fact of life

Peter Hain’s out-of-date reaction to the BNP being considered for BBC Question Time was attacked by David Jones, the Conservative MP, who has given a more realistic and measured response.

“It appears to have escaped Peter’s notice that, sadly, two BNP candidates actually were democratically elected to the European Parliament last June.

The BNP are an unfortunate fact of life and if mainstream democratic parties don’t take them on in debate, it will be to the shame of those parties and to the advantage of the BNP.”

Man acquitted over BNP threats

A businessman who confronted British National Party members when they put a leaflet through his door has said he feels “vindicated” after being found not guilty of threatening the men.

The BNP accused Mohammed Latif of abusing them and using threats against its members. However, the court heard how Mr Latif was simply handing his leaflet back to the racist party.

Mr Latif said he was handing the leaflet back because he did not want his wife or two young sons to see it.

Magistrate Kenneth Bailey said: “We found that Mr Latif’s evidence was more credible.

“Mr Williams’ evidence was short and vague, while Mr Warner’s failed to convince us.”
